Dispute on Las Cocinas beach, Nayarit, pits residents against the Dine group over a 20-meter strip

Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero acknowledged that the dispute between investors in Cantiles de Mita, part of the Dine Group, and residents of Punta de Mita centers on whether or not to move the project’s boundary twenty meters inland on Las Cocinas beach.

The governor indicated that—initially—the agreement was to move the boundary five meters; later, the developers conceded up to ten meters, however, the residents are demanding twenty meters, as stipulated in the Constitution.

Navarro explained that he held a meeting with businessman Fernando Senderos Mestre and engineer Carlos Slim, who initially agreed to only five meters, but after further discussion, promised to cede ten.

The conflict reached the ears of Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, who, along with the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, asked the governor to resolve the issue between the community of Punta de Mita and the investors of the Dine Group.

“The beaches must be democratic, but we must also guarantee investment that doesn’t violate the legal framework,” Quintero emphasized, adding that “if we all agree, you can be sure we will achieve results. We must strive for a Mexico of consensus, not confrontation.”

To date, the residents maintain their agreement not to accept the proposed ten meters, but rather twenty, which—they have warned—is “non-negotiable,” since the removal work has caused the destruction of Las Cocinas beach, a recreational area and also a turtle nesting ground.
