Mango and corn harvests plummet in Nayarit

Farmers in Nayarit are facing a challenging outlook due to low production, falling market prices, and high operating costs, a situation that will primarily impact crops such as mango and corn.

This warning came from Representative Adahán Casas Rivas, who explained that after visiting various agricultural areas of the state, a significant impact on mango production was detected, with an estimated decrease of between 70 and 80 percent.

This reduction represents a major economic blow for producers dedicated to this crop, as it is one of the most commercially important products in several regions of Nayarit.

In the case of corn, he indicated that the problem lies in the low selling prices, since producing a ton costs around 6,000 pesos, while currently the grain is being sold for between 4,000 and 4,500 pesos, generating losses of up to 2,000 pesos per ton.

A similar situation is faced by producers of beans, rice, and other staple crops, who must also contend with unfavorable marketing practices and financial pressure from loans taken out to bring in their harvests.

The legislator also warned of the livestock sector’s concern regarding potential health restrictions that could limit the movement and sale of cattle outside the state, leading to a local oversupply and further price depreciation.

The legislator deemed it urgent to strengthen federal strategies in the agricultural sector, particularly regarding the control of grain imports and the strengthening of storage infrastructure, warning that Nayarit’s agricultural sector is going through a critical period that jeopardizes the livelihoods of thousands of farming families.
