What will happen to the driver who beat a train across the tracks in Nayarit?

Francisco Avilés, president of the Transporte Nayarita (Transpornay) association, spoke about the video that went viral this weekend, in which a driver from the Progreso 4 route beat a train at a railroad crossing. He pointed out that, although the images do not fully show how close the maneuver was, it could have ended in a tragedy, and he regretted what happened.

“We regret these kinds of situations. Believe me, we do not agree with what is happening or with the way some drivers behave, putting passengers’ lives at risk. We hope it never happens again. There will be legal consequences from the Mobility Department,” said the interviewee.

He indicated that, at a minimum, the driver will face the suspension of his driver’s license. In addition, he will receive a financial fine, and the vehicle will also be sanctioned and taken to the impound lot. He explained that recovering the bus will represent a significant expense for the concession holder. He also shared what, in his opinion, may have motivated the driver to make such a dangerous maneuver.

Fines and traffic lead to reckless driving by bus drivers in Tepic

“There is a bigger issue. It has to do with traffic, fines, and the pressure drivers face every day. They are caught between two sides: on one hand, the municipality with expensive traffic fines, and on the other, the Mobility Department.”

The representative indicated that the fine for arriving late or leaving outside the scheduled time can be as high as 12,000 pesos for the driver. Because of heavy traffic, he explained, drivers become desperate and take dangerous actions in order to stay on schedule.

“They try to do things that, at that moment, they probably do not think through, and they make mistakes like this one. Honestly, fines are not the solution to end this problem,” he said.

Transpornay will continue training its drivers

Avilés added that the driver training project that was being promoted in coordination with the Institute for Job Training of the State of Nayarit (ICATEN) was left unfinished.

However, he assured that they continue to provide courses on various topics so that drivers can perform their work in the best possible way.

Finally, he expressed his confidence that this incident will not happen again and that it will serve as an example for other drivers, since this type of action puts not only their own safety at risk but also the lives of dozens of passengers.
