The state government and producers submitted a study to the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) to obtain recognition for Nayarit Coffee, a process that could conclude early next year.
The government of Nayarit, in coordination with local producers, has promoted the initiative for the state to obtain a designation of origin for its coffee, seeking official recognition on par with that already enjoyed by beans from Chiapas and Veracruz.
Nayarit’s Secretary of Economy, César Octavio Lara, confirmed that the project is now formally included in the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI)’s plan. “This study was conducted in coordination with the Technological University. During the process, it was reviewed by the IMPI. In other words, we invited IMPI itself to participate in the working groups. So, they practically pre-validated the study we submitted,” the official explained.
Thanks to this pre-validation and coordinated work, the secretary expressed confidence that the process will conclude favorably in approximately four months.
“We’re confident that by the end of January or early February we’ll have the ‘Café Nayarita’ designation,” Lara stated. The goal is for the state’s coffee to compete in the national and international markets with a seal that guarantees its quality and origin, formalizing the recognition it already has among connoisseurs.
