The Nayarit state government reported on Friday that a bus rollover in the municipality of Amatlán de Cañas, on the border with Jalisco, has left at least 11 dead and 32 injured. These figures come from the latest update from authorities, who indicate that the bus was traveling from Jalisco to a recreational center in Nayarit. Of the deceased, six died at the scene and the other five at the hospital in Amatlán de Cañas. “I deeply regret the accident that occurred this Friday on the Amatlán de Cañas highway, where injuries and loss of life have been reported,” said Nayarit Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro in a statement released on social media.

Authorities have not yet reported the cause of the accident, which occurred in the community of Pie de la Cuesta, a rural area located seven kilometers from Amatlán de Cañas, along a road that connects various points in the border region. Navarro explained that he requested the immediate attention of emergency and security agencies as soon as he learned of the accident. “[Since their arrival] they have been working at the scene providing assistance, medical attention, and support to the affected families,” the governor stated.

The incident prompted a deployment of authorities on the ground. The State Transportation Secretariat closed the road so that rescue teams could prevent further risks. A drone team conducted reconnaissance flights over the area for “search and assessment of the scene.”

Navarro conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased, “as well as my solidarity and support for those going through this difficult time.” “My commitment, and that of the entire government, is that you will not be alone; we will continue to monitor your situation and provide all the necessary support,” he stated in his message.

Local press reports indicate that the bus was traveling to El Manto, a resort located 20 kilometers from the accident site. The state government has reported that 19 people are hospitalized in Jalisco (one in serious condition) and two were transferred to the ISSSTE La Cantera hospital in Tepic. Authorities continue medical care, search and rescue operations, and inter-institutional coordination by emergency and security personnel.

Mexico ended 2024 with approximately 375,000 accidents, according to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). Nayarit represents a relatively small percentage of these figures, accounting for about 2,680 of the total, or approximately 0.7%. The majority of incidents (306,841 nationally; 1,776 in Nayarit) involve property damage, while fatal accidents are less frequent (4,188 nationally; 51 in Nayarit).
