It is Playa Escondida, also known as the Beach of Love. This secret paradise is located in the heart of the Riviera Nayarit tourist corridor, off the coast of Punta de Mita, in the municipality of Bahía de Banderas.
Although its name suggests that it is completely hidden and secret, the popularity of Playa Escondida has grown, making it one of the best-known jewels of Mexico.
However, its charm lies in its unique location: inside a crater, in a roofless cave, on Redonda Island, one of the two islands that make up the Marietas Islands National Park.
This archipelago, formed by volcanic activity more than 60,000 years ago, hosts an astonishing biodiversity. Coral fish, reefs, sea turtles, dolphins, manta rays, and eels are just some of the species that inhabit its crystal-clear waters.
How to get to Playa Escondida?
Accessing Playa Escondida is quite a privilege. You can only get to Las Marietas on authorized boats, with certified guides.
The trip from Punta de Mita takes about 15 minutes by boat. It is important to note that access to this destination is limited to 100 visitors per day, as part of the ecosystem conservation measures.
The tours offered by local tour operators usually include various recreational activities, such as diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Additionally, during the winter season, it is possible to spot olive ridley turtles and humpback whales in the surrounding waters.
However, entry to the Beach of Love is subject to weather and tide conditions, and the stay inside the crater is limited to a maximum of 30 minutes to preserve its natural beauty, but it does offer the best scenes for unique photographs.
